The Onin War was a deadly and devastating civil war that occurred in 1467 during a time of extreme chaos. The reign of the Ashikaga dynasty had grown incredibly weak and Japan was thrown into a state of chaos and war. This battle was fought majorly in Kyoto and surrounding areas, it was the battle that was the beginning to a time period called the Warring States. The Onin War was mainly fought between two samurai families, the Ashikaga and the Hosokawa. Each family used their mansions as make-shift military bases, and in the end neither of the two families won, but the heads of the families died and the dispute was forgotten.
Mongol Invasions:
The first Mongol invasion occurred in 1274, when an enormous fleet of Mongol ships led by Kublai Khan landed in Hakata Bay, Japan. The Mongol's first attempt consisted of 500-900 ships, totaling too approximately 40,000 soldiers came to Japan consisting of Koreans, Chinese, and Mongol soldiers. Soon after they docked, a typhoon struck the docks and border of the island, completely devastating the entire Mongol fleet, one-third of the fleet drowned while the rest retreated. The second Mongol invasion consisted of 140,000 soldiers and was much larger than the first invasion, this occurred in the year 1281. A typhoon hit again, this time sinking over half of the Mongol soldiers while the rest came onto shore to continue battle with the samurai. However the samurai were able to defend against them, and the Mongol invasion was a failure. The word for typhoon became Kamikaze, translating to "divine wind" as a way of saying thank you to the gods for delivering them out of such a grave situation.
