The Samurai were organized, and had elaborate battle tactics to ensure their success. Before going into battle, Samurai would go through a ritual where they paid tribute to the Japanese Gods, praying for success and prosperity in battle. They would also have large meals before battle where they would drink "sake" (a type of rice wine). During battle, Samurai were ruthless, they were known for both close quarters battle with a sword called a Katana, and they were also known for being skilled archers. One of the most famous archers of all time was Minamoto Tametomo, he was said to have sank an entire ship with just one arrow. When a battle was won, Samurai would sometimes be known to cut off the head of their victims and bring it to their daimyo to prove the death of their victims. The training of a Samurai was rigorous, and it involved both mental and physical challenges. They were trained in martial arts as well as the proper use of a katana. As for the mental training, Samurai were taught a code called “Bushido”. Bushido translates to “the way of the warrior” and was a moral code that Samurai were required to follow. In battle, foot soldiers were popular because the armour they wore was inexpensive and they had little equipment to carry.
